SQL Server 2008 r2 Management Studio problems -
i've been using management studio no problems on current machine 2 years, , migrated windows 10 few weeks back. last week started hanging on open following error:
microsoft.sqlserver.management.registeredservers.registeredserverexception: unable read list of registered servers on system. re-register servers in 'registered servers' window.
after doing research, managed around following advice found in this post, object explorer refuses expand. program acts world if not responding, i'll following error:
value cannot null. parameter name: viewinfo (microsoft.sqlserver.management.sqlstudio.explorer)
after that, can open new query window , responds, cannot use object explorer. i've looked @ this thread, doesn't seem solve me.
is there any chance don't have reinstall ssms?
update: attempted reinstall, failed error "the specified account exists"
.
i received same error message did, yesterday, sept. 30, 2015, when tried opening trusty sql server 2008 r2 management studio.
after researching , trying same things mentioned, no avail, try re-installing ssms (which makes me shudder thinking it).
i know had made no system changes recently, perhaps microsoft had changed system recently? because restore point made automatically windows 7 whenever system change made, naturally makes 1 whenever microsoft performs critical update. below can seen change made system microsoft:
and there, above, see windows update done 9/29/2015, day before troubles began. , had not used ssms until 9/30/2015, , that's when got error message describe. circumstantial evidence, if will.
i learned hard way 5 years ago re-installing sql server 2008/2008 r2 fraught great pitfalls , risk everywhere turn.
so i've seen coincidence of windows update, i've decided wait few more days see if microsoft come out fix, or perhaps thread receive increased attention.
steps see view restore points:
control panel\all control panel items\system
then in left panel choose system protection.
click button system restore...
click button next
also 1 more clue following link, says such error message can occur when user profile become corrupted: http://www.sqlserverf1.com/tag/microsoft-net-framework-error-unable-to-read-the-list-of-previously-registered-servers-on-this-system/
